Dr. Ilona Herczeg

With nearly five decades of clinical experience, I have dedicated my career to developing child and adolescent psychiatric care in Hungary, training new specialists, serving as a board examiner, and fulfilling regional chief medical officer duties. I retired as a department-leading chief physician and a specialist in psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and psychiatric rehabilitation. I also earned a degree in Health Management from the Haynal Imre University of Health Sciences, after graduating from the Semmelweis University of Medicine in 1977. My professional identity and career path are inextricably linked to the clinical traditions of Lipótmező (the National Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology – OPNI), where I began working in 1977 and subsequently obtained my specializations in psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and ultimately psychiatric rehabilitation.

My therapeutic approach is fundamentally systemic, multidisciplinary, and focused on crisis intervention, prevention, and rehabilitation. My dedication to the profession was decided during my high school years through student volunteer work at the Balassa Street Clinic. I firmly believe that child psychiatric treatment is true teamwork: the patient does not arrive in isolation but brings the most crucial figures of their daily environment (family, school) into the therapeutic space.

In my case management, I have closely integrated up-to-date pharmacotherapy with psycho- and sociotherapeutic modalities, viewing the child in their entirety. Since the personality and socialization of children and adolescents are still developing, they are exceptionally vulnerable to their environment. Therefore, the core of my work has been not only the stabilization of acute psychoses but the creation of a "child-friendly" therapeutic ecosystem that minimizes the trauma of hospitalization, alongside ensuring a gradual, supported reintegration into the community.

As a senior consultant and leading medical expert, I support the Murmo team pro bono from the background, contributing decades of clinical, diagnostic, and department leadership experience.

On a leadership and strategic level, my commitment to Murmo manifests in active, system-level thinking regarding the organizational structure, as well as the continuous reflection on and modernization of training protocols.

Appointment as Department-Leading Chief Physician (1989) – OPNI Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Department

Regional Chief Medical Officer for Central Hungary

National Board Examination Rights – In Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Within the framework of the Pro Juventa Foundation and MURMO, I am primarily dedicated to professional training, mentoring, and preserving clinical methodological traditions through leadership consultations. Drawing from my past professional roles—such as serving as the head of the Youth Section of the Hungarian Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association and as a board member of the Association for Child Psychiatry, Child Neurology, and Child Neurosurgery—it remains a cause close to my heart to guide the next generation of child psychiatrists, clinical child psychologists, and special education professionals.
